Microsoft by the Numbers revealed that Windows Phone Store now has more than 300,000 apps and hundreds are being added daily.

"We have more than 300,000 Windows Phone apps today and the Windows Phone Store continues to grow," a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to TheNextWeb. "In the past year alone the Windows and Windows Phone app catalog has grown 94%, while the number of active developers has grown by 50%."

Apps are one of the key drivers of mobile platform growth.

Several Windows Phone Nokia Lumia models have been highly praised by pundits for innovative and comprehensive features.

The imminent launch of Windows Phone 8.1 could boost the interest of developers to invest time and money on applications for Windows Phone OS-powered devices.

Microsoft has customized its Windows Dev Center website to be a one-stop-shop for developers to access resources for building apps and games across smartphone, tablet and PC.

The website also provides hundreds of Windows Store and Windows Phone Store app samples that can help neophytes in apps development.

Top Windows Phone apps include WPCentral, Sketch Camera, TVShow Plus, Metrotube, Status Tiles, Airyware Tuner, MoliPlayer Pro, Movie Maker, Translator One and AllTube Grabber.

While this feat is worth celebrating, Windows Phone Store has a lot of catching up to do with rivals, Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Back in October of 2013, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that there are more than 1 million apps thriving in the App Store, with 60 billion total apps downloaded.

Forbes on the other hand, reported that Google Play has around 950,000 Android apps available as of December, 2013.

At present, Apple and Google are dominating the billion-dollar mobile apps realm.

Both tech giants have invested heavily in continuously developing iOS and Android.

In fact, this coming fall, Apple is expected to introduce iOS 8 to consumers and Google's Android L is arriving any time soon.
