"The Last of Us," the survival horror video game from Naughty Dog was released back in 2013. The game chronicled the adventures of Joel and Ellie as they make their way across a post-apocalyptic U.S. Since its release, gamers have been clamoring for a sequel. Unfortunately, Naughty Dog has yet to reveal official details regarding a possible sequel.

Rumors regarding "The Last of Us 2" started gaining traction a few months ago. Back in June, during a Q&A panel at MetroCon in Tampa, Florida, voice actor Nolan North revealed, "I know their doing a 'Last of Us 2.'"

After this revelation, game director Neil Druckmann spoke up to clarify. According to Druckmann, a small team at Naughty Dog had begun to talk about possible ideas and prototypes for the upcoming sequel. However, production was halted after the company experienced delays on the upcoming "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End."

However, rumors about the sequel returned after someone from Naughty Dog slipped up and accidentally pointed to the possible existence of "The Last of Us 2."

During a livestream broadcast to promote the Nathan Drake Collection last September, Naughty Dog writer Josh Scherr said, "and [on] the first 'The Last of Us.' Uh, did I say the first 'The Last of Us?" It is possible that Scherr referred to "The Last of Us" as the first because there are already plans to expand it to a series. Scherr was visibly flustered upon realizing that he may have slipped up.

While Naughty Dog remains tight-lipped about the production of "The Last of Us 2," fans remain patient and hope that an announcement will be made soon.

At this time, there is no official release date for "The Last of Us 2." Hopefully, Naughty Dog will make the announcement after the release of "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" on March 18, 2016.
