'Reign' season 3 spoilers: What happens to Mary after Francis' death? History says she returns to Scotland and meets her second husband, Henry Stewart.

(Official "Reign" Facebook)"Reign" season three airs on The CW every Friday, 8/7c

It may not be what fans want but Francis' death is but inevitable for "Reign" season three, especially as the show wants to keep a level of historical authenticity. But the fans need not worry too much about Mary Queen of Scots - her life has many stories to tell and the show still has some surprises up its sleeves.

The CW's "Reign" is very loosely based on the life of Mary Queen of Scots (Adelaide Kane). But even with the show taking a lot of liberties with what happened in her life, especially within the French court, the writers felt that King Francis' (Toby Regbo) death is something they cannot just change. Even with fans obviously distraught about the announcement (some of them have gone into lengthy details on the official "Reign" Facebook page as to why Francis should live), it seems the show is indeed taking everyone to a chapter in Mary's life where Francis no longer existed. And what kind of life is this?

Still full of "Reign"-like drama, whether or not it decides to stick to the Queen of Scots' life post-Francis.

The past episodes, Francis and Mary have been preparing his brother Charles (Spencer MacPherson) for the eventual rise to the throne and marriage with Mary. Many speculate on this happening so as to have Mary stay in French court. But there's also the possibility of the writers throwing away this story arc as it will deviate too much from history. Mary's marriage to Charles never happened, after all. But if the show intends to ground Mary longer in France, then maybe a stronger alliance between her and Catherine de' Medici (Megan Follows) can also be unraveled.

If the show does stay accurate to what was written in history, Mary will be leaving France shortly after Francis' death and she will struggle to get a hold of her power in Scotland. And since romance is a huge factor in the show, it might also play straight into introducing Mary's second husband, Henry Stewart. Given, there was a six-year difference between Francis' death and Mary meeting Henry but the show can always play the timing up.

Yes, Francis' death may truly be heartbreaking. but it is hardly the end of Mary's life. Watch how her story continues as "Reign" season three airs new episodes on The CW every Friday, 8 p.m.
