'Reign' season 3 spoilers: showrunner confirms Francis' days are numbered

Mary and Francis are starting to rebuild their relationship in season 3 of the historical drama fiction, "Reign." But it seems their love for each other will not go beyond the latest season, as the series showrunner confirms that the current King of France will face his death within the season.
Entertainment Weekly spoke with Laurie McCarthy, a showrunner for The CW's "Reign." She confirmed that the show will indeed be following history books and killing off Francis (Toby Regbo) in season 3. History dictates that Francis II of France did not last long in the throne as he died only 17 months after assuming power.
But "Reign" has not always followed history and fans could have gone on watching the show clueless that the love story between Francis and Mary, Queen of Scots (Adelaide Kane), is about to end. So why spoil the show this early on? Because she wants viewers to start getting used to it.
"I wanted it to be an emotional journey that we all went on and that we could all feel the highs and lows of, and I wanted it to be a love story. I didn't want it to be something that shocked the fans or really anybody. I needed to process it, too," McCarthy explained.
The showrunner accepted that it will be heartbreaking and that is also part of why she opted to break the news now — so that when it happens, everybody would have processed the tidbit already and will not be as surprised.
She also detailed why the show decided to follow history on Francis' death. McCarthy said that viewers did go into the show knowing it is going to be a tragic love story. Plus, his death had been promised, even in the pilot.
McCarthy added, "It felt incredibly natural like it was time, before we got so far away from the stakes that we put in the ground at the beginning."
But it will not entirely be a loss. It will be heartbreaking, yes, but fans will also get a story that honors and celebrates the love between the royal couple. She also promised a proper send-off — not quite what one might read in the books, but one that fulfills the prophecy.
"Reign" season 3 airs on The CW every Friday, 8 p.m.
