Moto X Play rumors: Device to release in the U.S. through Verizon as the Droid Maxx 2

(MOTOROLA)Verizon is likely to release a black Moto X Play as the new DROID Maxx 2

Motorola unveiled its three new Moto smartphones earlier this year. The Moto X Style (also known as Moto X Pure Edition) is Motorola's flagship and high-end smartphone while the Moto X Play is their mid-range smartphone offering and the Moto G (2015) is the budget smartphone.

Consumers were impressed because even though the three smartphones were offered at different price points, all the devices had very impressive and high-end specifications.

Unfortunately, consumers were soon disappointed to learn that Motorola would not offer the Moto X Play to U.S. consumers. To placate consumers, Motorola announced that they would offer more choices later in the year.

Recently, it has been speculated that the Moto X Play will be coming to the U.S., however, under a different name. Verizon will reportedly re-brand the Moto X Play into the DROID Maxx 2.

Verizon has been known to release tweaked and rebranded versions of Motorola handsets as U.S. exclusives. It had done the same last year, when it released the Motorola DROID Turbo.

Currently, the Moto X Play has a 5.5-inch Full HD 1080p display. It is powered by an octa-core 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor with 2 GB of RAM.

The smartphone's camera is also very impressive with a 21 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front-facing camera. The device is loaded with the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS and has a water repellant coating.

The Moto X Play's powerful 3,630 mAh battery also makes it an alluring smartphone.

Speculations regarding the rebranding of the Moto X Play into the DROID Maxx 2 seem to be due to features of the Moto X Play that are consistent with the defining features of Verizon's DROID line up. This includes a powerful battery and water repellant features.

The Moto X Play has very impressive specs already, but Verizon may opt to further enhance the smartphone. The Moto X Play has been offered with a $300 price tag. It is likely that Verizon will stick to a similar price point.

The rumored DROID Maxx 2 will be an excellent purchase for Verizon subscribers who want a mid-range smartphone with powerful and impressive features.
