'Modern Family' season 7 spoilers: Mitchell takes on odd jobs; tensions grow with Cameron
Perhaps one of the most loved family units in "Modern Family" is the small, weird yet equally adorable family of Cameron, Mitchell, and Lilly. With a big reveal for this unit at the end of season six, it leaves a lot of fans asking what's to happen to them, specifically Mitchell. Actor, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, spills the beans.
Season six of "Modern Family" had a lot of going on between Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet), with the latter suspecting that the former is hiding something, perhaps an affair. But the truth is, Mitchell lost his job and when he finally admitted that to his partner, fans sure were in for better twists and turns for the next season.
Mitch has always been sort of uptight and mild-mannered (which made him a good match to his almost exact opposite, the flamboyant and loud Cameron), wanting things around him in perfect order and working to make sure they are able to provide for not-so-little Lily. His being out of a job then opens him to a situation he's never been in before, turning the tables around and putting the pressure of "bringing home the bacon" on Cameron's shoulders.
So what is Mitch to do with all his free time? Ferguson tells Bustle, "My character starts to get a little stir crazy and kind of goes off on a tangent of trying to paint to occupy some of his free time and tap into his artistic side. Then, sort of realizes there's no money in that. Then, starts picking up random jobs here and there. At one point, he's actually coaching Lily's soccer team, but yet [he has] no knowledge of how the game of soccer is played. The writers are giving me a lot of really fun stuff to work with this season, so far."
With the role reversal in their family, it is then no surprise to see some tension rise up between the two dads. But Cameron will remain supportive. The 39-year-old actor recounted the scene when he coached Lily's soccer team.
"Eric and I just shot a really great episode, where [Mitchell] is coaching Lily's soccer team and [Cameron] is sort of coaching me over Bluetooth on what to say and [he's] watching the game from the bushes with binoculars," says Ferguson.
It sure is going to be a fun season for the Tucker-Pritchett family. But there are also other exciting stuff happening around the other family units. The kids are off to do more adult stuff: Alex is going to college, Hayley is going to be in an adult relationship, and Manny is evolving into a real romantic. Lots of things going on, for sure, and the show has something for everyone who's been a fan since the past seasons.
"Modern Family" returns to ABC this Sept. 23.
