'Modern Family' season 7 plot details emerge; teen issues will have a bigger focus, showrunner suggests
"Modern Family" has a chance to make history this Sept. 20, as it tries to gain its sixth consecutive Emmy Award for "Outstanding Comedy Series." Only two shows have five consecutive wins under their belt, "Modern Family" and "Frasier."
Three days after the 2015 Emmy Awards, "Modern Family" is set to premiere its seventh season. Whether the show wins or loses, it must be acknowledged that the "Modern Family" has achieved tremendous success.
Part of the show's success has been simply telling the story of a modern American family. Show co-creator, Christopher Lloyd, mentioned that viewers won't see epic cliffhangers or changes happening in the lives of the Pritchett family.
"We're always challenging ourselves to nudge outward a little bit, but not so much that people start to feel like the show isn't the show anymore," Lloyd said.
The upcoming season seven seems to be a promising season for the cast and crew. With the younger cast growing up, there are more possible storylines to tackle. Haley has entered adulthood while Manny and Luke have settled into their roles as teenagers and the issues that usually accompany this life stage. "Kids are facing these things, and, as a result, the families are facing these things," Lloyd added.
Lloyd also recently discussed what to expect for the upcoming season.
Alex will be off to college this season. She is beyond excited as she feels that she will finally be with other people who share the same interests as her. She eventually realized though, that things may not be as easy as she thought.
Phil and Claire experience a bit of an empty-nest syndrome but will also be busy dealing with Luke, who has turned into more naughty and criminal behaviors.
Jay Pritchett is also soon retiring and Claire may feel some pressure having to take over the business.
Mitch and Cam on the other hand, will be experiencing some financial difficulties.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson revealed that since Mitch has quit his job as a lawyer, he has taken on a few odd jobs to contribute financially. Cam, on the other hand, has become the family's breadwinner. Problems are bound to arise as they deal with their current situation. "The writers are giving us fantastic stuff this season," Ferguson said.
Season seven will also see a cast change. Baby Joe Pritchett, who was played by Pierce Wallace, will be recast. Producers are reportedly looking to cast a slightly older 4-year-old for the part.
Season seven of "Modern Family" premieres on Sept. 23, Wednesday, at 9/8 c on ABC.
