LG G3 vs Galaxy S5: Specs, design, camera and initial sales
The newly-launched LG G3 has given people who are looking for a high-end smartphone a new alternative. To consider itself a member of the high-end smartphones category, it needs to compete against other similar devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S5.
The following specs show how LG's top device fares in a LG G3 vs Galaxy S5 comparison.
Chipset, RAM and Storage
LG G3 was rumored to be powered by the new Snapdragon 805 chipset, which was announced last year to be available in 2014. However, the smartphone ended up with a Snapdragon 801. The same goes for the GS5, and most other current top devices.
Both the G3 and GS5 come with either 16GB or 32GB internal storage, which is expandable by microSD cards. The LG G3 come with either 2GB or 3GB RAM, while the GS5 has 2GB RAM.
Display, Size and Weight
LG uses its homegrown screen for the G3, which measures 5.5 inches, boasting a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution aka quad HD. Before the Galaxy S5's launch, it was reported the 2014 Samsung flagship would have an upgraded screen resolution, however it sticks to a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution on a 5.1-inch screen.
At 149 grams, the LG G3 is 4 grams heavier than the Galaxy S5, which weighs 145 grams. LG's phone comes a bit bigger too with its 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.4 mm dimension, compared to GS5's 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm.
Camera
Camera is one of the departments where phone makers tend to invest heavily. To get an edge on the competition, the LG G3 packs a 13MP camera with optical imaging stabilization (OIS), while Samsung includes a 16MP camera, but without OIS. Both smartphone cameras has great focus speed. LG does it by using a technology initially intended for vacuum cleaner robots – an infrared laser beam gauging the subject's distance.
Home Market Sales
LG's flagship was just announced, late May, and was made available this week, while the Samsung smartphone was announced in February and released in April.
Recent news reports LG G3 has outsold Galaxy S5 in a 3 to 1 ration in the two devices home country, South Korea. The GS5 had some issues during launch and initially sold only 7k to 8k per day in Korea. The G3 is now shipping 25k to 30k units a day.
