Lenovo Yoga 900 vs Microsoft Surface Book: Yoga 900 has better specs at a lower price

When Windows 10 launched last July, all eyes were on gadgets that can fully maximise the new operating system's potential. A little over three months after the general public release, Windows 10 gadgets are still coming out and it's a matter of choosing which one is the best out there. With Microsoft's official Surface Book out, how do gadgets from other competitors fare? Critics look at the Lenovo Yoga 900, the latest Windows 10 gadget out in the market.

Lenovo's Yoga line is named as such because it is flexible enough to assume different forms. The Yoga 900, in particular, can bend 360 degrees, making it one of the more flexible tablets out in the market. With the new watchband-like hinges, flexing the device has become easier.

But its form factor is not the only thing that makes the Lenovo Yoga 900 a viable competition for Microsoft's own Surface Book. Under the hood, Lenovo's latest laptop-tablet hybrid has the 6th-generation Intel Skylake, a choice between the Core i5-6200U or the Core i7-6500U, and also between 8GB or 16GB DDR3L memory.

Side by side, Tech Times note that Lenovo's entry might edge a win over Microsoft's. Physically, the Yoga 900 is thinner and lighter at 0.59 inches and 2.8 pounds versus 0.51 to 0.90 inches (depending on the model) and 3.34 pounds of the Surface Book. The Surface Book may also have the slightly bigger screen at 13.5 inches versus 900's 13.3 but pixel density is better on the latter at 276 ppi vs. 267 ppi.

Those who attach a lot of device to their laplets may also opt to go for Lenovo's latest Yoga. It already sports one USB 3.0 Type-C, two Type-A, and a 4-in-1 card reader (compatible with MMC, SD, SDHC, and SDXC). The Surface Book only has two USB 3.0 Type-A ports but is also equipped with the full-size SD card reader. Even those looking at colour choices have more with Lenovo, which is available in Champagne Gold, Clementine Orange, and Platinum Silver. The Surface Book is stuck with just one colour, Magnesium Silver.

But the Microsoft Surface Book also has some things going on for it. Battery life is better at 12 hours versus Yoga 900's claimed 9. It also has a dedicated GPU with Nvidia GeForce GPU, while the Yoga 900 has none.

In the end, for those looking at value for their money, the Lenovo Yoga 900 comes out a clear winner as it is also only priced between $1,199 to $1,499. The Surface Book, on the other hand is more expensive at $1,499 to $3,199. But if the laplet is meant for heavier graphics work, then the Surface Book is still something worth looking at because of the dedicated GPU.
