iPad Mini 3 and iPad Mini 2 - same chipset, same cameras, so where do the differences lie?
The iPad Mini 3, which was released last year had a slight advantage over its predecessor, the iPad Mini 2. Below are the differences between Apple's two mini tablets.
Design
When it comes to their design, there is very little to differentiate the two devices. The Mini 3 and the Mini 2 both have an aluminum unibody. However, when it comes to colors, the Mini 2 has only two options, space gray and silver while the Mini 3 comes in space gray, silver and gold. Both are extremely similar when it come to dimensions and weight. The only major difference between them is the fingerprint sensor called the Touch ID. The Mini 3 is now equipped with the Touch ID, which makes downloading games, installing updates and purchasing apps a lot easier.
Display
The displays on both devices are similar. Each features an IPS LCD screen with an LED-backlight. It measures 7.9 inches with a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels and a density of 324 pixels per inch. Both displays are also protected with an oleophobic coating.
Specs
Specs are also very much the same for the two devices. Surprisingly, Apple has decided not to upgrade the specs of the Mini 3, so both mini tablets come with an Apple A7 chipset, a Cyclone CPU with two cores clocked 1.3 GHz and a PowerVR G6430 GPU. However, despite the old hardware, the tablets perform exceedingly well and can still hold their own against competitors with better specs.
Memory
Just like other Apple devices, both the Mini 3 and the Mini 2 do not have memory slots. In terms of RAM each device is equipped with 1 GB.
Camera
Both the Mini 3 and the Mini 2 have 5 megapixel rear cameras and use 1.2 megapixel cameras for the front cameras.
Price
The 16 GB iPad Mini 2 with Wi-Fi is priced at $299, while the 16 GB iPad Mini 3 with Wi-Fi is priced at $399.
