HTC One M8 for Windows debuts at NYC event; Verizon exclusive
Rumors were finally laid to rest Tuesday, as the HTC NYC event debuted HTC One M8 for Windows.
"Award-winning design meets Windows Live Tiles. One touch refocusing, front-facing stereo speakers, voice controls, and a fully customizable Live Tiles home screen," the official HTC website stated.
The model is one of the most well-received Android phones launched this year, so it is not surprising that Microsoft requested for it specifically.
"The M8, as our flagship, has been doing fantastic," said Jeff Gordon, HTC's online communications manager. "Microsoft came to us a while back and, loving what we did with the HTC One M8 for Android so much, they wanted to do something similar, but running Windows Phone software."
"We're really kind of following Microsoft's lead on Windows Phone as opposed to HTC Sense, where we control the entire experience," Gordon added.
The HTC One M8 for Windows specs are identical to that of Android variant, with 5-inch full HD screen, Snapdragon 801 chipset and HTC's "BoomSound" speakers.
On the outside, the only noticeable difference is the "Windows Phone" logo beneath the "HTC" branding on the back of the smartphone.
Of course, Microsoft has ensured they will leave distinct Windows Phone flavor on the smartphone, otherwise highly associated with Android OS.
Social feeds and news sites that clutters the Android home screen are now accessible via an app in Windows. Windows' Live Tiles gives users the ability to pin what matters most to their home screen.
There is also Cortana, the "smart personal assistant for a personal smartphone".
The HTC One M8 for Windows is exclusive to Verizon for now and is available for $99.99 with a two-year contract, or $29.99 per month via Verizon Edge.
However, HTC also confirmed that it will be coming to AT&T soon.
The previous Windows Phone-based HTC phones, HTC 8X and 8S were launched in September of 2012.
