Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez fight rumors: Triple G is obvious big favorite
The much-awaited decision on whether WBC middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will take on Gennady Golovkin next is now on the table, with many holding varying takes on the big match.
Alvarez did mention after his conquest of Amir Khan that he is willing to face Golovkin at the 160-lbs. catchweight but not everyone is biting. The 'Mexican Brawler' has been known to respond out of anxiety, proof of it was when he defeated Miguel Cotto back in November.
Recall that while Alvarez did create quite a stir by saying he was not afraid and wanted to take on Golovkin, all those were quashed in a couple of days when the Mexican revealed that it should be made at the 155-lbs. mark.
Though he has touched on the catchweight issue, handler Oscar De La Hoya is expected to step in at some point. Making the Alvarez vs. Golovkin fight is not expected to be resolved that easy as stipulations will likely stand in the way.
Assuming that it does happen, Golovkin is an expected favorite despite being nine years older than Alvarez. He has won most of his fights via KO and this has installed him as a big favorite over the WBC middleweight champion.
Triple G is a minus-400 favorite over Alvarez according to pundits, though Alvarez has as good a chance as any other boxer with the right preparations and game plan.
For now, it remains to be seen what happens in fight negotiations, though it is not expected to be a smooth one. De La Hoya will look out for his boy and is aware of what Golovkin carries. If not Triple G, Alvarez may opt to face other fighters, though there may be consequences with that move.
That includes surrendering the WBC middleweight title to live another day until the Alvarez camp feels that they are ready to take on the hard-hitting Gennady Golovkin.
