'Doctor Who' season 9 update: Clara, Kate, and Missy revealed in new set photo; Executive Producer sheds light on episode
The Doctor is returning to the small screen in less than a month but there's no stopping Whovians from eating up the latest update about "Doctor Who" season nine. BBC America knows this so well as the network just released new images from the new season's pilot.
"Doctor Who" will be returning with a bang as season nine pilots with a two-parter titled "The Magician's Apprentice" and "The Witch's Familiar." BBC America gives fans a sneak peek of what to expect in the new season via a series of images.
The new photos showcase characters who Whovians are already familiar with: Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), and Missy (Michelle Gomez). The photos, however, defy the usual saying that "pictures paint a thousand words" as they are mere photo stills of each character and do not reveal much about what's going to happen in the two-part season opener.
But showrunner, Steven Moffat, assures viewers that it's going to be one heck of a ride. He says, "Why not start with a blockbuster? Why leave it till the last two weeks? So yes, it's like starting with a finale, and having a big, grand, movie-sized story, as opposed to a 45-minute story."
Aside from the pilot episodes, the show has also spilled the beans on episode titles and some details. Blogtor Who spoke with Executive Producer, Brian Minchin, who revealed the following:
- 3 and 4: No title given. Ghosts will be featured underwater.
- 5 and 6: "The Girl Who Died" and "The Woman Who Lived." Maisie Williams' appearance on the show. Will also showcase space Vikings.
- 7 and 8: "Invasion of the Zygon" and Inversion of the Zygons." Dubbed as the sequel to the "Doctor Who" 50th anniversary special.
- 9: No title given. This will be the previously reported "lost footage"-style episode.
- 10: Also no title given. Minchin called this episode the "invasion of invisible streets."
- 11: This is the one hander episode, starring only Peter Capaldi.
Minchin, understandably, held off on revealing anything about the season finale.
"Doctor Who" season nine premieres on Sept. 19 on BBC.
