'Big Hero 6' sequel news: no confirmation yet on follow-up; records impressive home video sales

Disney's 'Big Hero 6' has had quite a run. Not only did the film take in an impressive $572 million haul at the box office, it also won this year's Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Given that the source material is an obscure Marvel comic book series from the 90s, the success of the film is something that both Disney and Marvel can applaud themselves for.
It should come as no surprise then that the video release of 'Big Hero 6' was wildly successful, with the film taking the top spot at the national home video sales rankings for the week ending in March 1 this year. That should bode well for a potential sequel though at this point, producers have yet to announce anything regarding a potential sequel.
The most recent word from directors Don Hall and Chris Williams is that they are very proud of the movie but they have not planned anything extensively in terms of a sequel.
As reported in an article at JoBlo, Williams said, "These are characters that we've grown to know very well, now it's time to let go of them, and they're going into the world without us. We're in the middle of that phase. So we haven't talked about or thought about any sequels or anything like that. Having said that, of course, we love these characters, and the thought of working with them again some day definitely has its appeal."
Hall then added that the most important consideration is making sure that a potential sequel will be of similar of better quality than the original film.
Still, there's plenty of material to work with for a potential sequel, so there's a strong possibility that the 'Big Hero 6' franchise can continue is some form or another.
