ASUS Zenfone 2 specs versus Moto X (2nd generation) – camera against power

(ASUS)Asus Zenfone 2 Source:

Taiwanese computer and mobile phone manufacturer Asus unveiled its new flagship phone, the Asus Zenfone 2 in Las Vegas, Nevada, during January this year. At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 that just concluded in Barcelona, Spain, participants got to see the Zenfone 2 in the flesh. More updates regarding details of the Asus ZenFone 2 about its new specs, features, price range, and pre-order details are now available online.

Meanwhile, Motorola launched the successor to Moto X, the Moto X (2nd generation) in September last year with quite a few upgrades. We take a look at both the devices and compare the specs of the Asus Zenfone 2 with the Moto X (2nd generation) that is already available in the market to see which fares better.

Specs/performance: The Asus Zenfone 2 comes with a quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor clocked at 2.33GHz and runs on Android Lollipop 5.0. It is still unclear whether the Asus Zenfone 2 will have a RAM capacity of 4GB or 2GB, though media reports suggest two variants will be available in the market.

On the other hand, Moto X (2nd generation) is powered by a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor with 2GB of RAM, and is also expected to get the Android Lollipop 5.0.2 patch soon. This makes it slightly faster and more responsive than the Asus Zenfone 2.

Display: The Asus ZenFone 2 is equipped with a 5.5 inch IPS Panel that can render a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and a pixel density of 403 ppi. Moto X (2nd generation) features an AMOLED screen with a slightly smaller screen size of 5.2 inches diagonally with a similar resolution, but higher pixel density of 424ppi. Both the handsets come with Gorilla Glass 3-protected screens and have equally good viewing capabilities.

Storage: The Asus ZenFone 2 has three variants of internal storage; 13, 32, and 64 GB, which can be expanded of up to 64 GB via microSD card. Moto X (2nd generation) comes with just 16GB of internal storage with 32GB available at an extra price via Moto Maker, but no MicroSD expansion, making it a deal breaker.

Camera: The Asus Zenfone 2 has a 13-megapixel rear camera with 3x optical zoom and a 5-megapixel front camera, while Moto X (2nd generation) also has a 13-megapixel rear camera with dual-LED ring flash and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera capable of full-HD (1080p) video recording. The rear cameras in both handsets capture striking images, though 2-megapixel front-facing camera in Moto X (2nd generation) doesn't perform up to expectations.

Battery: The Asus Zenfone 2 is the clear winner here with its 3000mAh battery that gives it a longer battery life, as compared to a 2300mAh battery in Moto X (2nd generation).

Price: The pre-order price for the 2GB RAM version of the Asus Zenfone 2 is expected to be around $299, while the 4GB RAM version is likely to cost $440. This makes it less expensive than the 16GB Moto X (2nd generation) which is available for $499.

Asus has announced a March 9 release date for the Zenfone 2 in Taiwan.
