Apple's stylus is here - and it's awesome

Will this be a new era of iPads and iPhones sporting a stylus?

It's Samsung's biggest consumer magnet, and Apple has been keeping its distance from the stylus as Steve Jobs was not its biggest fan. But recently, Apple has adopted the stylus and even taken it to another level as it was awarded a new patent for the "Communicating Stylus."

Everything about this stylus, now circulating as the iPen, is based on movement and not the pen's interaction with the touch screen, putting the stylus and the device in a long-distance relationship. According to the official patent, the communicating stylus can transfer handwritten notes or drawings to an iPad or an iPhone without the need to touch it.

"The stylus may be used for entering data into the computing device without actually touching the device nor requiring any specialized paper. Rather, the stylus is able to enter data into the computing device, corresponding to images or text drawn draw on any surface," the document said.

This means you can write on a whiteboard, on the wall, and even in the air, with your device in your drawer or pocket, and whatever you write or draw will still appear on the phone or tablet. It comes with different tips, so you can still write on rough areas.

Furthermore, the document states that the stylus includes a position-sensing device such as an accelerometer, a tip for writing, a transmitter for sending position data, a receiver, and a computing device. Because of this, you can move it across three-dimensional space. According to the images in the patent document, the stylus doesn't seem to be bulky.

"As the stylus moves, one or more accelerometers may track the position and relative motion of a tip of the stylus," the document said.

Consumers are curious if Apple will launch this new patented product alongside one of its tablets or smartphones.
