Apple is due to release its iOS 9 on Sept. 16 and and aside from gearing up for the launch of the iOS 9.1, they will also be kicking off its open beta program.

All eyes are focused on the iOS 9 and its features, which will bring improvements to the battery life, among other things.

iOS 9 is going to come to a number of older devices and this, as Forbes noted, is going to be good news for users who have iPhone models such as the iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and of course, last year's models the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The upcoming update will also land on the iPad 2, iPad Mini and models that were released after the iPad 2. The update will only be around 1.3 GB in size.

As usual customers, can upgrade to iOS 9 for free when it arrives. One of its main features is going to be an improved battery life. This will result in devices like the iPhone 6 running faster and lasting up to 10 percent longer, which translates to about 1 hour of use.

Another major feature is the split screen running of apps for the iPad, which means two apps can be run simultaneously, however, as of now this feature will only be available on newer models such as the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Pro. The Slide Over feature, meanwhile, will allow users to move one app sideways and then work on another, while the Picture-In-Picture feature is designed to allow a small window to be displayed with an alternate app.

Security features are also going to get a major boost with iOS9 and Gizmodo reported that a two step ID authentication process will be included. Meanwhile, the Notes App had also been reworked and changes in Apple Pay will see support for new card types such as Discover. Finally, Maps in the upgraded mobile operating system are now going to include transit routes for various forms of public transit including subways, busses and trains.
