Xperia M5 vs. HTC One (M8): Metal device from HTC gets a faster competitor

The One (M8) is still one of the best looking smartphones available despite it being released over a year ago. However, a slew of new devices have arrived to challenge HTC's device, one of which is the Xperia M5. Here is how these two smartphones compare.

Design

When it comes to design, the One (M8) screams luxury. It has a metal unibody with rounded edges, finished off with a fine polish. In terms of colors, it has three options, gray, gold and silver.

As for the Xperia M5 from Sony, it has the company's OmniBalance design system, so its frame is made of metal while glass is used for its front and back. Additionally, the frame slightly overlaps over the glass. Its corners also come with an added layer of protection. One of its advantages is its IP68 dust and water resistant rating which means it can be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. It comes in three colors, black, gold and white.

Display

The display on the Xperia M5 and the One (M8) are alike in terms of size and sharpness. Each has a 5.0 inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a density of 441 pixels per inch. As for the type of display, the device from Sony has an IPS LCD screen while its competitor has a super LCD3 screen.

Specs

With the Xperia M5, which was just recently released, Sony opted to use a Mediatek MT6795 chipset along with an octa-core CPU clocked at 2.0 GHz and a PowerVR G6200 GPU. In the One (M8), there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, a Krait 400 CPU with four cores clocked at 2.3 GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU.

Memory

The memory slot on the One (M8) can support up to 128 GB of external storage but the version on the Xperia M5 is far more superior and can be used to add up to 200 GB. As for RAM, One (M8) has 2 GB while the Xperia M5 has 3 GB.

Price

The price of the Sony Xperia M5 has yet to be revealed but the HTC One (M8) costs $199 with a two-year contract.
