WWE rumors: Former wrestling star Marc Mero to undergo heart surgery
Marc Mero may not be a top star in the world of wrestling, but he is still known and loved. Now at 55, Mero was recently found to have a heart problem and the former wrestler is now scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday in Cleveland for a heart valve and aorta replacement.
This is not the first time that Mero will be undergoing heart valve replacement, something he had surgery on back in 2007. He was dealing with an enlarged heart in late 2014 but the operation was held off temporarily when it shrunk. Unfortunately, the operation was merely held off, and now, the surgery will push through since he needs one.
Mero has had a rollercoaster career in wrestling, having been to the WCW, WWE and TNA. His longest tenure was with the WCW until his departure in 1996 due to differences with "Diamond" Dallas Page's wife, Kimberly. He was a former WCW World Television champion, a title he held on three occasions.
From there, he made the jump to the WWE as the "Wildman" and was managed by his wife Rena "Sable" Mero. In the WWE, he held the Intercontinental title (1996). He was sidelined due to an injury for a year and returned as the "Marvelous" Marc Mero. He was last seen in the WWE in 1998 before eventually leaving in 1999.
He would return to the WCW after which he made jumps to the X Wrestling Federation and TNA Wrestling. Unlike his initial stints with WCW and the WWE/WWF, Mero never had the chance to become champion and eventually retired from competitive wrestling in 2006.
Mero admitted in 2007 of using anabolic steroids and recreational drugs throughout his career while having overdosed three times. Following the death of Chris Benoit in 2007, Mero started making appearances in schools to educate children of the dangers of drug use.
