After it was thought that the HBO series "True Detective" would no longer be renewed for another season, the latest news is that it will have a season 3 and might just feature the return of one of its original characters, Rust Cohle.

According to reports, there is a possibility for the series to have a season 3, although it may not arrive earlier than 2018. It is said that "True Detective" producer Nic Pizzolatto's hands are currently tied to a new HBO drama that will feature Robert Downey, Jr. in the lead, "Perry Mason," which originally aired from 1957 to 1966.

With Pizzolatto's focus on the remake of "Perry Mason," it has been learned that HBO may consider hiring other writers to scribe the script of "True Detective" season 3. Nonetheless, the story will still have the touch of the executive producer as it is said that he will still supervise it.

It can be recalled that many thought that the season finale of "True Detective" season 2 was already the end of the line for the HBO series, much more that it was hinted some months ago that the series was already headed to the chopping board. However, it was learned that HBO president for programming himself, Casey Bloys, who said that the series can still return to the small screen for another season run.

"It is not dead, but there's no take on a third season yet," said Bloys when he faced members of the press during HBO's Television Critics Association press event last July.

Meanwhile, apart from the good news that "True Detective" will return for another season, it is also speculated that Matthew McConaughey will make a comeback to the series to reprise his Rust Cohle character.

"I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights... I was a happy man when we made that ('True Detective') for six months...I've talked to Nick (Pizzolatto) about it..." said McConaughey in an interview on "The Rich Eisen Show" last June after he was asked if he was willing to reprise his role.

Will "True Detective" season 3 really arrive in 2018? Will the upcoming season make room for McConaughey's Rust Cohle character?
