'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 premiere spoilers: Will Stefan's plan to bring back Damon involve Elena?

(Facebook/thevampirediaries)Elena may be the key to bring back Damon in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8.

Stefan (Paul Wesley) may have to use a trump card to bring Damon (Ian Somerhalder) back in the upcoming season of "The Vampire Diaries."

During the last installment's finale, the Salvatore vampire and Bonnie's (Kat Graham) boyfriend Enzo (Michael Malarkey) went into the Armory to find a cure for the witch. Whatever monster that was inside seems to have changed them because when Stefan and the others managed to open the vault several months after, the two were gone. At the same time, news of some unsolved murders reached Stefan's group, leading them to believe that both Damon and Enzo might be on a killing spree.

When Stefan was writing in his journal, he promised Elena (Nina Dobrev) that he would do everything to bring back his brother. It was her whom the monster used to lure Damon into the vault.

Executive producer Julie Plec previously told TV Line that the actress personally came to the set to record her automated dialogue replacement (ADR). Rumors claim that it will not be the last time viewers will see an Elena-Damon reunion. The showrunner even confirmed they plan to have Dobrev back for the finale.

Speculations that season 8 will be the last are still rife ever since Somerhalder let it slip in a press conference. Although he cleared that up and said he was being presumptuous in saying that, many still believe the announcement was a slip of the tongue. If the upcoming installment is the last one, it may be the time to bring Elena back into the fold. She may be the key to make Damon remember and free himself from the creature's hold. It will be tough, as Plec shared in an interview that the Armory monster is unlike anything the viewers would ever see.

"What could it be that's been around for thousands of years? We didn't see it, but it has some creepy ass monster hands, and it has the ability to get inside your heard and strip away everything good about you. There's a nice mystery taking us into next season about what exactly this creature is," she said.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 is expected to premiere in the fall on the CW.
