Captain Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) and his squad on the USS Nathan James will travel to the East to find some much-needed answers in the next season of "The Last Ship."

Showrunner Hank Steinberg told The Hollywood Reporter in September that there would still be plenty of things to do for the survivors of the pandemic. Securing the cure was only the first of many steps to get the country back on its feet. Chandler and his team would be starting the cure distribution, while President Michener (Mark Moses) would begin the rehabilitation of the devastated nation through the government. In season 3, new problems would continue to crop up and threaten the temporary peace they fought hard to establish.

"The season finale is the first real victory after having a number of losses. It's really the beginning of something. When we come back in season three, we'll be coming back to very much a work in progress with lots of problems and, of course, new enemies and new issues, new complications and all those things," the EP said.

Meanwhile, the newly released promo for the latest installment gives fans a glimpse of the multitude of hurdles that the main characters are about to face. Chandler will learn of the bloody encounter between the guerrillas and his men. XO Mike Slattery (Adam Baldwin) and five others will be held hostage and their friends on the USS Nathan James are their only hope to get out alive. Chandler will do everything to save his men, even going to unknown territory to find some clues to their whereabouts. The clip shows them going to Asia.

Aside from searching for intel about Slattery and the others' location, Chandler will also be dealing with another pressing matter. Michener tells him that the virus has mutated and Japan is already on red alert. The squad will have to see what they are up against, as the cure they worked so hard to secure appears to be ineffective against the new threat.

"The Last Ship" season 3 will return on June 12 at 9 p.m. EST on TNT.
