The second season of TNT's "The Last Ship" ended more than a month ago and thankfully for the show's fans no longer do they have to worry about the renewal of the series. A month before the airing of season 2 finale, TNT as reported by Deadline confirmed that the network has ordered one more run for the post-apocalyptic program. Vine Report has since claimed that the third season would debut in the summer of next year.

With the worry of cancellation out of the way, avid viewers are now only dying to find out more about what the upcoming debut would have in store for Commander Tom Chandler and the rest of his crew. Fortunately both Steve Kane and Hank Steinberg, showrunners for "The Last Ship," have spilled details about the third season.

At the offset of the second season finale, Kane and Steinberg sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the current and upcoming run. During the interview, Kane revealed that the open ended ending was done on purpose. The production wanted the story to continue past the cure and leaving season 2 with a little bit of mystery was decided to be the way to go.

"It was purposely ambiguous. ... We like the idea of showing that the show's not over, that there're still threats out there. Otherwise, it felt like, "Well, I guess they got the cure. Why keep watching?" It's part of the structure."

In the same report, Steinberg spills details about the third season and according to his account the upcoming debut would see a bigger "The Last Ship."

"I think the one thing we can say is season one was about staying alive and then getting home. Then, season two was about getting things started in America and starting to put [the country] right. Season three is going to expand again into the wider world, which is going to be an exciting new palette and widen the scope of the show even more."
