'The Last of Us 2' release date update: To take a backseat to give way to 'Uncharted 4'

(Naughty Dog)The main protagonists Ellie and Joel of the game "The Last of Us." There are speculations that one of them might die in the game's sequel.

Game developer Naughty Dog's action-adventure survival horror game "The Last of Us" is yet to get a second installment. Since its release three years ago, fans of the game have been patiently waiting for the second title to come. New reports reveal that it may take a backseat for now to give way to other games.

According to reports, Naughty Dog's plate is full because of "Uncharted 4." Although the developer did not scrap the idea of "The Last of Us 2," the company has been noticeably tight-lipped about it. Creative director Neil Druckmann had previously hinted that they are indeed considering a sequel especially that the first title became an instant hit.

Druckmann also revealed that he and Bruce Straley are already throwing in a lot of ideas and possibilities for "The Last of Us 2."

The question is no longer about "The Last of Us" getting a sequel but when that sequel is going to be developed and released.

The much-awaited second title may come out later than expected. Apparently, Naughty Dog's top priority as of the moment is its other popular game, "Uncharted 4." Druckmann reportedly said that the development of "The Last of Us 2" will only start after the completion of "Uncharted 4's" single-player expansion. Also, there are rumors that the production of the film adaptation of the game has been idle for some time.

According to other reports, "The Last of Us 2" may introduce Ish as the new main character, along with Ellie and Joel. In the previous installment, Ish and his group were taking shelter at the Pittsburgh sewer's mouth. Although they have created their own community, they have not met Ellie and Joel in person. Most of the people in Ish's community died after an attack, but the aftermath was not shown.

More details about "The Last of Us 2" may soon be announced.
