'The Expendables 4' rumors: Steve Austin to return as a villain?

(Reuters)

For the past months, a lot of buzz has surrounded the fourth installment of "The Expendables," and while there are not too many official announcements from the set, it is said that Steve Austin will once again be back to play a villain role.

Recent reports suggest that Austin, who is also famous for his title "Stone Cold" in the wrestling community, has been tapped by Sylvester Stallone for a villain role that has yet to be revealed. There is no assurance that the reports are authentic, but since Austin is respected for his performance in the first installment, fans are expecting that the professional wrestler will make his comeback.

If the rumor is true, he will join Hulk Hogan, who has been confirmed to join the roster. Hogan reportedly couldn't refuse Stallone's offer since he helped him get his first shot at the spotlight. It is unclear what role Hogan will play, but rumor has it that he might replace Stallone as Barney Ross, now that the Golden Globes awardee is looking forward to working on the sequel of "Creed."

Another wrestler and actor rumored to join the cast is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. He has been on the list of rumored new cast members ever since the fourth movie was announced. Although there are few details about the said talk between Johnson and Stallone, rumor has it that he prefers to be a villain instead of a hero.

Meanwhile, Jason Statham and Arnold Schwarzenegger have both confirmed that they will return to reprise their roles, though it remains to be seen if Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, and Terry Crews will be back.

Earlier this year, Crews commented that Stallone may now turn his focus to "Creed," after the latter won the Best Supporting Actor award during this year's Golden Globes and was nominated for an Oscar. Stallone did not give his insights about Crews' comments, but fans started speculating that the rumor about Hogan taking over his role may be true.

To find out if the Hogan will be the new Barney Ross, watch "The Expendables 4" when it hits the big screens in 2017.
