'The Affair' season 3 spoilers, news: Upcoming season to give characters a sense of resolution; will Noah and Helen rekindle their romance?
Fans of "The Affair" had some of their questions answered as Scotty Lockhart's murder was revealed in the season 2 finale as just one big, tragic accident. However, it also raised concerns as to what will come next for Noah and his relationship with both his ex-wife, Helen, and his lover, Alison.
In the finale of "The Affair" season 2, it was revealed that Scotty's (Colin Donnell) demise was like a Greek tragedy, with Alison, Noah and Helen having an unwitting hand in it.
The way Noah (Dominic West) recalled it, he caused the accident that killed Scotty when he caressed his ex-wife, Helen's, (Maura Tierney) hand, causing her to take her eyes off the road, consequently hitting him. But in Alison's perspective, she caused his death when she pushed the inebriated and angry Scotty away from her after he tried to force himself on her.
Sadly, the season ended with Noah taking the blame for Scotty's death, in order to protect Helen. But fans will know how the situation will play out now that "The Affair" has been renewed for a third season.
There are a number of questions that fans want answered in season 3, such as what's next for the writer now that he's facing prison. There's also the question of Noah and Helen's relationship. Loyal fans will recall that in the last episode, Noah went to cool off when Alison admitted that Joanie wasn't his daughter. The writer bumped into his ex-wife and the two started talking, with both realizing that they still have feelings for each other.
While the romance part is still a big mystery, it's been reported that Helen's guilt in Scotty's death and Noah's jail time might have a major impact on her relationship with her ex-husband next season.
Joshua Jackson, who plays Cole Lockhart, had previously mentioned in an HNGN interview that the third chapter of the series will give the characters a "sense of resolution."
This is certainly in line with what the show's creator, Sarah Treem, hinted at in early 2015 when she talked to Elle about her ideas for the show's next couple of seasons. Treem explained that the idea was that "each season was going to represent a different stage in a love affair." She likened the first season to that of having a crush, with all the accompanying melodrama, and the second season to the rose-tinted glasses coming off, when doubt creeps in. She added that the third season will change things up again and revealed that she doesn't think the show would pay off "until the third season."
Season 3 of "The Affair" is slated to be released on Showtime sometime in 2016.
