'Super Mario Run' release date, gameplay, news: New game lacks offline mode to avoid piracy
"Super Mario Run" will be released very soon, but it will not offer an offline mode for security purposes.
The endless runner and one of the most classic characters in the gaming world, Super Mario, will start running across iOS screens next week. However, enjoying "Super Mario Run" will require users to keep their internet connection on if they want to continuously play the game.
In a recent interview, the creator of "Super Mario," Shigeru Miyamoto, explained that the decision to keep the title in an online mode is primarily to secure the software, which in effect will make sure that the three game modes of "Super Mario Run" will operate in sync with each other.
"We want to make sure that we're able to offer it ... in a way that the software is secure, and that they're able to play it in a stable environment," Miyamoto said, according to an interview with Mashable.
Miyamoto further explained, "We wanted to be able to leverage that network connection with all three of the [Super Mario Run] modes to keep all of the modes functioning together and offering the game in a way that keeps the software secure."
The mastermind of the "Super Mario" franchise also revealed that the security aspect is also the main reason why Nintendo opted to debut a mobile Mario game through Apple's iOS devices.
The game creator gave an affirmative answer when Mashable clarified that Miyamoto means "piracy" when he talks of "security." Miyamoto added, "We're launching in 150 countries and each of those countries has different network environments and things like that. So it was important for us to be able to have it secure for all users."
"Super Mario Run" will be released with three game modes. First is the classic story mode where Mario runs endlessly while he collects as many coins as he can and needs to reach the flagpole at each level. Nintendo also introduces the battle mode called "Toad Rally" and another mode where all collected coins from the timed battle games can be used to create a Mushroom kingdom.
Going back to when the game was first announced right when the iPhone 7 was unveiled last September, Miyamoto presented "Super Mario Run" as a very convenient one-tap mobile game. During the presentation, Miyamoto pointed out that "Super Mario Run" will allow iOS users to play with Mario "while holding on to a handle on the subway, while eating a hamburger, or while eating an apple."
"Super Mario Run" will be available initially for free and all game contents can be unlocked for a set price of $9.99 on Thursday, Dec. 15.
