'Star Wars' Han Solo spin-off film news: Emilia Clarke joins cast
A new female lead has been cast in the "Star Wars" Han Solo spin-off film. British actress Emilia Clarke has been tapped to play an unnamed role.
Clarke's character will meet young Han Solo and his trusted companion, Chewbacca, in the upcoming standalone film. The actress is famously known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO's fantasy series "Game of Thrones." The news came via the official "Star Wars" website.
According to the announcement, "Clarke's role will round out a dynamic cast of characters that Han and Chewie will encounter on their adventures." This certainly means that there are plenty of other new characters that will be introduced in the yet-untitled film.
It was previously reported that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, known for their work on "The Lego Movie," were screen testing actresses for the female lead. And while it was also revealed that Tessa Thompson, Naomi Scott, and Zoe Kravitz were being considered for the role, Clarke ultimately won the part.
The lead role in the film "Han Solo" has also already been cast. Alden Ehrenreich is set to bring life to the role previously portrayed by Harrison Ford. And while it goes without saying that Ehrenreich definitely has big shoes to fill, he seemed to have made a big impression on the directors — especially considering that he was the first person they saw during the audition process, which included over 3,000 actors testing for the part.
It was also revealed that Chewbacca will be accompanying young Han in the upcoming film. Ehrenreich shared that his screen test included being on the Millennium Falcon with Chewie. Apart from that, Donald Glover has nabbed the part of young Lando Calrissian, who was first introduced in "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" as a friend of Han's.
The upcoming "Star Wars" Han Solo spin-off will be released in 2018.
