'Star Wars' Han Solo film news, spoilers: Production to commence in February; Donald Glover talks Lando Calrissian
The forthcoming "Star Wars" Han Solo film is already taking shape. Set to bow in theaters in 2018, the yet-untitled-film is scheduled to begin filming in February 2017.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy spoke to BBC News reporter Lizo Mzimba and revealed the shooting schedule for the upcoming film. February is only two months away, and some of its cast members have already been announced.
Alden Ehrenreich will portray the young Han Solo, a role originated by Harrison Ford. Another familiar name will join Han in his smuggler ways as it was also revealed that Chewbacca will be by his side. Emilia Clarke of "Game of Thrones" fame has also been cast in an unspecified female role. Finally, "Atlanta" star Donald Glover, who also goes by Childish Gambino in the music scene, will play a young Lando Calrissian.
Excited about his role, Glover recently told The Hollywood Reporter that his character will still be finding his way and won't be exactly the same as Billy Dee Williams' Lando Calrissian featured in the original "Star Wars" trilogy.
"Cool changes depending on the perspective. Also, it's fun because [the Han Solo movie is set] before ["Empire Strikes Back"], so he's still figuring it out a little bit, which is fun," Glover said.
The upcoming film centered on a young Han Solo will tell the story of how the dashing debonair came to be the smuggler he was when he met Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. Kennedy also revealed that the anthology film will have a heist or Western feel to it, as opposed to the space opera vibe utilized by "Star Wars" films. Since "The Force Awakens" killed off the character — by his own son, no less — fans are undoubtedly excited to see him alive and well once again, albeit portrayed by a different actor.
It is unknown if there will be any Han Solo film sequels, but it has been said that there is a possibility for them. For now, fans will have to settle for the only announced Han Solo film, which is expected hit theaters on May 15, 2018.
