'Star Wars: Episode 8' update: Mark Hamill clarifies a statement

(Facebook / Star Wars)Actor Mark Hamill will reprise his famous role as Luke Skywalker in the upcoming film "Star Wars: Episode VIII."

During an event in London where actor Mark Hamill was a guest, he said, "I finish Episode 8, and then I'm out of work." Although his statement could mean a lot of other things, it created speculation that the upcoming installation is the last time viewers will see his character Luke Skywalker in the franchise.

Fans of the story are still not over the death of one of more popular Star Wars character in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." The movie has added newer cast members. While the older actors still play important roles, the story's shift to the younger generation is evident.

To prevent further speculations, Hamill took to Twitter to explain. On June 27, he posted, "I meant 'out of work' because #Ep8 is wrapping soon, OK? #DontOverThinkEVERYTHING @ParsingHamill #WaitForVIII"

Meanwhile, Luke was only seen during the final scene in the first movie, although his character has been mentioned greatly during the run. The previous movie focused on the awakening the force in Rey (Daisy Ridley) who was speculated to be Luke's daughter. That theory, however, has been crushed and Rey's parentage is believed to be revealed in the upcoming film "Rogue One," which is a spin-off of the franchise.

It is believed that Luke will train Rey as she journeys on to be a Jedai. In his younger years, the force was strong within Luke as well, but the affinity was traced to his relationship with Anakin Skywalker who later on became the infamous Darth Vader.

In the series, the force is the major balancing factor between good and evil. People possessing the force are either drawn to light or the dark side. The amount of force within an individual does not determine which side wins, but the affinity the chosen one chooses plays a big part in the ongoing battle.

"Star Wars: Episode VIII" is scheduled to premiere in December 2017.
