'Sherlock' season 5 plot news, cancellation rumors: Steven Moffat talks next season's story

"Sherlock" has already concluded its fourth season with the recent airing of its finale, "The Final Problem." Rumor has it that there may not be a fifth season in the cards, but, should there be one, co-creator Steven Moffat is sure of what the next chapter will look like.

"The Final Problem" tied everything together neatly with a bow, leaving no space for cliffhangers or open-ended questions. This was apparently done on purpose, said Moffat, because if a fifth season ever gets commissioned, the Baker Street duo will be back to their usual crime-solving ways.

"There isn't something we have to come back to address. Which is quite good for us. Because if we do come back, we can just start with a knock on the door and a new client, and they can go and investigate," Moffat told Entertainment Weekly in an interview.

Moffat, along with co-creator and star Mark Gatiss, previously teased that they only had a faint idea of what the next season's story could be if the show continues.

With Mary (Amanda Abbington) gone and Sherlock's newfound sense of humanity, the series can go back to its roots of solving seemingly impossible cases. Moffat also considers the past four seasons as a sort of prequel to the Sherlock depicted by Basil Rathbone.

"He's now where we're most used to those characters being — Watson is the brave widower and Sherlock is the wise and humane version we're most used to," Moffat pointed out. "If we ever make any more, it will be about two blokes in their mid-40s, which is the more traditional Sherlock Holmes. So yes, it's sort of an extended origin story."

As for the possibility of a fifth season, everyone on board the "Sherlock" train seems to want to continue the series given the chance. However, with the increasingly busy schedules of everyone involved, including stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, they may need to jump through a few hoops to get there.

Plenty of cancellation and renewal rumors have surrounded the show even before its season 4 premiere. However, it looks like the decision is genuinely up in the air at the moment.
