'Sherlock' season 4 cast news, updates: Benedict Cumberbatch clears the air on Tom Hiddleston rumor
False alarm, everyone. Benedict Cumberbatch has, once and for all, put an end to rumors involving Tom Hiddleston playing the third Holmes brother in the upcoming season of "Sherlock."
It can be recalled that co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss revealed a three-word teaser of sorts at the San Diego Comic-Con about "Sherlock" season 4. The words? Smith, Thatcher, and Sherrinford. The third word is what sparked a frenzy among fans since Sherrinford was the name that author Sir Arturh Conan Doyle considered for the detective protagonist before landing on Sherlock. And in the previous season, Gatiss' character, Mycroft Holmes, hinted that there was a third Holmes brother that had yet to make an appearance.
Following that, rumors started circulating that Hiddleston, who has previously worked with Cumberbatch on Steven Spielberg's "War Horse," would be playing Sherrinford Holmes. The rumor stemmed from a photo that Gatiss himself tweeted.

However, in a recent interview with Radio Times, Cumberbatch has confirmed that there is no truth to the rumors involving Hiddleston. But that doesn't mean that "Hiddlebatch" fans won't have something to look forward to.
For those who have seen Cumberbatch's latest Marvel film, "Doctor Strange," it can be recalled that a mid-credits scene hinted at the sorcerer's involvement in "Thor: Ragnarok," which, of course, stars Hiddleston as Loki alongside Chris Hemsworth's eponymous Asgardian god. However, Cumberbatch remained ambiguous.
"In 'Thor Ragnarok?' Er...I'm sorry. Big fat line through those questions. I'm not gonna say anything," the 40-year-old "Sherlock" star said.
There are only two more months of waiting left to do before season 4 of "Sherlock" premieres. As previously reported, a teaser trailer has revealed that the first episode, titled "The Six Thatchers," will air on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2017.
As for a fifth season, Cumberbatch previously said that season 4 "may be the end of an era," sparking speculations that there may not be any more "Sherlock" to go around. But Moffat has said that nothing of the sort has been officially decided and that they would all be up for a season 5 if things fall into place.
