Samsung Galaxy S8 release date, specs rumors: No more flat-display variant for the next Galaxy S phone?

Samsung's new phablet, the Galaxy Note 7, made its debut this week, but rumors about the next flagship smartphone – the Galaxy S8 – are already starting to make the rounds.

Next year is another year for Samsung fans to look forward to as a Galaxy S7 successor is expected to arrive. Most tech experts and fans believe that Samsung will introduce the Galaxy S8 at the annual Mobile World Congress, which usually takes place in March in Barcelona, Spain.

There have already been talks about what this new smartphone will bring to the table. For instance, recent reports suggest that Samsung will discontinue producing flat-faced phones and will make the curved displays, or Edge variant, its flagship device. As noted by BGR in its report, the Galaxy Note 7, which is only available in a curved display, is a test device from the South Korean tech company to see how consumers will receive the new phablet, knowing that it won't have a flat-faced variant.

If sales go well for this curved-display Note 7, Samsung might ultimately decide to stop making flat-display devices. Of course, it's too early to tell as nobody knows what Samsung is really cooking up but it is highly possible especially with the hint coming from Koh Dong-jin, head of Samsung's mobile business.

"Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen)," Dong-jin said in a media interview.

Meanwhile, other rumors stated that the Galaxy S8 might sport a 5.5-inch 4K-resolution display, which should make it an appropriate device for running apps compatible with Virtual Reality. It is also expected to come with beefed-up camera specs, as well as internals. Rumor also has it that the phablet might have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 or Exynos 8995 chipset.

As of now, nothing has been set in stone yet and the rumors surrounding Galaxy S8 is bound to get more interesting in the coming months.
