'Rick and Morty' season 3 spoilers, release date: Fans coming up with numerous theories about season 2's cliffhanger

(Facebook/RickandMorty)"Rick and Mort"y season 3 might be aired later this year.

They say that idle hands are the devil's workshop and it appears to hold true for "Rick and Morty," as the long wait for season 3 has resulted in fans concocting elaborate, interesting, and totally plausible storylines.

Season 2 ended with the brilliant but alcohol-addled doctor turning himself over to the Galactic Police so that his family can return to Earth. It was a noble and selfless act, but fans know that no prison can hold the scientist for long. Unfortunately, the season finale also ended with Mr. Poopy Butthole telling viewers that they would be waiting "a year and a half or longer" before they can see the situation resolved.

While some fans have resigned themselves to waiting, others have used the time to come up with fan theories. One of the more popular theories revolves around the idea that the Rick that was sent to the Galactic prison is from another dimension and not from our Earth. Some fans have pointed out that the ticket handed to the main protagonist, who hails from the C-137 multiverse, in an earlier episode had the number 5126 on it. This presumably meant that some identities were switched up, hopefully resulting in the revelation that the Rick that viewers have been following is actually still roaming free, while the one in prison is a Rick from another dimension.

Other fans have posited that the C-137 version of Krombopulos Michael is still alive and willing to help Rick. The assassin was killed earlier in season 2, but some fans are banking on the bug-like creature to still be alive and kicking and willing to spring free the Rick in prison.

In other good news, Mr. Poopy Butthole's suggestion that fans will be waiting for almost two years before a new season of "Rick and Morty" is aired might be wrong as the show's co-creator, Dan Harmon, revealed that they are targeting for a 2016 return date. He also said that season 3 will run for 14 episodes.
