Chip-maker Qualcomm continues to be in the news and after reports of alleged overheating issues in its Snapdragon 810 SoC, a new leak has surfaced about an upcoming Snapdragon first processor with a 10-core CPU. According to the new leak, Qualcomm is developing an impressive 10-core processor named Snapdragon 818 for upcoming flagship Android mobile devices.

Qualcomm's 810-64 bit processor can be presently found in various Android devices, but has faced flak for overheating, which the company has denied. The 810 SoC provides a superior mobile computing experience with its 8-core processor, X10 LTE connectivity, Adreno 430 GPU and native 4K capabilities.

Based on the new leaked specs sheet, Qualcomm's deca-core Snapdragon 818 will come with four low powered Cortex A53 cores, clocked at 1.2 GHz, two medium powered A53s with frequencies of 1.6 GHz and four more Cortex A72 cores with 2.0 GHz frequency. Qualcomm is reportedly building the 10-core Snapdragon 818 using the 20nm process and housing an Adreno 532 GPU. The Snapdragon 818 supports LPDDR4 RAM and will be able to manage LTE Cat-10 speeds after its release.

Qualcomm is also confirmed to launch another processor named the Snapdragon 820 with its custom Kryo cores, though the leaked specs sheet of the 10-core Snapdragon 818 indicates that the company still continues to remain dependent on ARM's core design. Qualcomm's decision to use the A72 in the 10-core Snapdragon 818 indicates that the company is aiming for more high power performance.

It's not really clear if today's smartphones really require such high processing power, but a flagship powered by Qualcomm's 10-core Snapdragon 818 could see a huge demand. Moreover, Qualcomm could also be trying to win back Samsung with its high power 10-core processor, as the Korean smartphone giant had stopped using the company's processors last year and switched to its own Exynos chipset.

Qualcomm has confirmed that it will launch the Snapdragon 820, though there has been no official word yet from the chip manufacturer about the Snapdragon 818.
