Mid-way through "Penny Dreadful" season two, Showtime and Sky UK Limited renewed it for a nine-episode season three. The upcoming season is scheduled for release in 2016 and its production is now in full swing, with a very generous sneak peek coming fans' way.

With "Penny Dreadful" season three production underway, fans of the horror drama are starting to get more and more excited. To up the ante, a lone first look photo had been released online. It does not give away much but it's enough to create some frenzy.

The photo was shared on the show's official Facebook and came with the caption, "Evil is something Vanessa Ives cannot escape. Here's the chilling first look at Penny Dreadful season three!" It shows Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) reunited with what looks like Joan Clayton, the Cut-Wife, only this time she's not the Cut Wife anymore but rather Dr. Seward (Patti LuPone), a therapist. The character's name is the same as the one mentioned in Bram Stoker's "Dracula," leading to some speculations that maybe it's the same character (albeit portrayed by an American woman versus the original English gentleman) and that Vanessa will be the new season's counterpart of Renfield.

But that's just one of the theories. Fans of the show came brimming with their own theories and sharing them on the official Facebook. The photo has earned for itself almost 2,000 comments, some offering their own theories. More love were thrown the new season's way with almost 30,000 likes and over 3,000 shares.

While all fan theories are still up in the air and remain speculations at the moment, some things are already certain for season three. Aside from LuPone's return as a different character, Samuel Barnett joins the cast as Dr. Seward's secretary as does Jessica Barden as Brona's and Dorian Gray's acolyte Justine.

"Penny Dreadful" is expected to return to Showtime on May 2016.
