Hot on the heels of Apple filing a patent for a smart ring has emerged news that Samsung has made a similar patent filing. This particular bit of news made rounds when a patent filing made by the Korean manufacturer of smartphones and wearables appeared on the Internet.

Until this year, companies that manufactured wearables were competing against each other with their smartwatch offerings. However, now the focus is slowly shifting to smart rings and Android Authority states that the patent filed by Samsung demonstrated just that. Among the things that the smart ring from Samsung will be able to do is control smartphones and several other devices around the house.

As for the main action on the ring, it involves rotating it to the right or left when the user is trying to control devices or smartTVs. When it comes to controlling a paired smartphone, the user will also be able to navigate through its menus and control it.

The diagrams included in the patent filed by Samsung also showed the ring being paired with a smartphone. Once this is done, the user will be able to see a menu outlining the functions that are included in the ring. Users will then be able to navigate through icons if they want to control specific gadgets in their home, like a TV or radio. As for the other objects that the ring will be able to control, these include blinds and lights.

In addition to Samsung filing a patent for a smart ring, other companies that have a strong presence is the wearables market like Apple, Microsoft and Google also have their own patents for similar offerings. Given that the market for wearables is just being explored and is expected to grow over the next few years, it is likely that the first smart rings in the market could arrive soon.
