'Overwatch' release date news: May 24 for PC, PS4, Xbox One
Fans will just have to wait one more week until they get their hands on the upcoming multiplayer first-person shooter game "Overwatch" from the gaming giant Blizzard.
The highly anticipated "Overwatch" game from Blizzard — home of numerous mega hit titles like "World of Warcraft," "StarCraft," and "Hearthstone" — had the most successful open beta in the history of the game developer. It will release on Tuesday, May 24, to gaming platforms PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
The open beta can be accessed for those who pre-purchased the game before Apr. 29 on Battle.net or on GAME. Blizzard's most successful open beta drew more than 9.7 million players. Aside from being able to get into the open beta version of the game, gamers who pre-purchased will also get the Noire Widowmaker skin when the game officially hits the stores online and offline.
The price for "Overwatch" differs, depending on the store's players pre-order. Battle.net on PC is priced at £29. On Amazon, it is available for £35.99, excluding the early access benefits. GAME sells it with a price tag of £47, plus some exclusive benefits.
The gameplay for the game features a squad-based combat between two opposing teams with six players each. There are four character roles that players can choose from. It includes offense characters that are capable of doing high-speed attacks with low defense, defense characters who can do choke points for enemies, support characters that are aimed at doing buffs and debuffs for their alliances and foes respectively, and tank characters that can withstand enemy attacks and draw fire away from teammates.
During the recent BlizzCon, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment Mike Morhaime said, "Our goal with 'Overwatch' is to create an awesome FPS experience that's more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love."
