OKC Thunder trade rumors 2016: Blake Griffin to be paired with Russell Westbrook?

Now that Russell Westbrook has inked an extension deal, the Oklahoma City Thunder can move forward and may seek for another star player they can pair with him to again have an All-Star duo. One of the options is Los Angeles Clippers' Blake Griffin.

(Reuters/Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports)The Oklahoma City Thunder are reportedly planning to sign the Los Angeles Clippers' Blake Griffin next year.

After the departure of Kevin Durant this free agency, almost everyone expected Westbrook to bail out on Oklahoma City. That was why he was linked to numerous trade and free agency rumors. However, the 27-year-old proved them all wrong this week when he displayed loyalty and signed a three-year extension pact.

With Westbrook being the lone superstar for the Thunder, The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski wrote in his report on Yahoo Sports that it is time for the point guard to recruit great talents to Oklahoma City. Griffin is among the players he can bring in when the 2017 free agency hits.

Griffin is also a frequent subject in rumors despite the fact that he is one of the Clippers' stars along with the likes of Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan. Perhaps the reason for this are his injuries in the past season, off-court issues, and a rumored tension with Paul.

The contract of Griffin allows him to opt out in the final year and this might be the chance Westbrook and the Thunder have to add him in 2017. If they successfully do, another All-Star tandem will rule Oklahoma City.

Griffin may not be on the same level as Durant but he is an elite-caliber player, and an explosive one which will likely compliment Westbrook's fast-paced game and aggressive style of play.

The biggest roadblock in adding Griffin could be Clippers president of basketball operations and head coach Doc Rivers who does not intend to deal away any players because of the goal to keep last season's core intact.
