nVidia GTX 980 news: Popular nVidia GPU for desktops is now coming to high-end laptops

One of the most popular models of GPU from nVidia is their GTX 980 graphics card but it was specifically made for desktop computers, not on the laptop. However, it seems like that will not be the case anymore as the company recently announced that the GPU is now coming to laptops.

The graphics card or commonly referred to as GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) GTA 980 —not the mobile version — is now coming to high-end gaming laptops and it is specifically made for serious gaming enthusiasts, according to Engadget.

This video card, as noted by the source, will be the same as the one used for desktops. It will have the same features and specifications of the computer version but will be much smaller compared to the original one, as this is intended for portable computers.

The GTX 980 for laptops is said to come with 2,048 CUDA cores and will sport in a base clock speed of 1.1 GHz. In terms of video RAM or VRAM, this GPU is said to have 4 GB of memory that is GDDR5 and a memory speed of 7 Gbps.

With these specifications, laptops can now run any of the latest games using the maxium settings without ever losing framerate per second (FPS). Furthermore, Engadget also stated that VR headsets, mainly Oculus Rift, will be fully supported. This means any VR games in the market today that are GPU demanding can now be played on future, high-end gaming laptops.

As for the gaming rigs that will come with the GTX 980, Engadget listed them down and the list includes the upcoming, first ever water-cooled laptop from Asus, the Asus ROG (Republic of Gamers) GX700, which is expected to be equipped with the latest GPU, as well as the 18-inch MSI GT80 laptop. Other brands, which will also equip their upcoming laptops with the nVidia GTX 980 are the Gigabyte and Clevo.
