'Major Crimes' season 5 spoilers: Raydor meets her new match
It has been a while since a new episode of "Major Crimes" was aired by TNT, but the crime drama's return for the second half of season 5 opened in a new time slot, as well as a new problem for Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell).
In the episode titled "Heart Failure" that airs tonight, Feb. 22, Raydor will be forced to answer to LAPD Deputy Chief of Operations Winnie Davis, portrayed by guest star Camryn Manheim.
The arrival of Davis in the series will remind the viewers that Raydor used to be the pain in the neck of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) from "The Closer," the original series where "Major Crimes" was spun off.
"It was definitely an intentional parallel," series creator James Duff said in an interview with NY Post. "It's interesting to have [Raydor] on the other side of that now, to have her sort of in the same situation and see how she deals with it, as opposed to how Brenda dealt with it. The way she struggles to adapt to Winnie is great."
The feud between Raydor and Davis will be partly caused by the fact that both of them will try to take over the vacant post left by Assistant Chief of Special Operations Russell Taylor (Robert Gossett), who was killed in a previous episode this season during a courtroom shooting incident.
Davis will also have an effect on this week's investigation. According to the synopsis for episode 14, the deputy chief will delay the team's investigation of a young woman's murder as she continuously breathes down Raydor's neck all throughout the investigation.
Meanwhile, next week's episode of "Major Crimes" season 5 will center on the death of a young man whose throat was slashed in his Atwater living room. The episode will be aired by TNT on Wednesday, March 1.
