Made for iPhone Halo: next-gen hearing aids tuning in on iPhone

The next-generation "Made for iPhone" hearing aids Halo, from Starkey and GN would not need any adjustment to suit to the noise of their surroundings. Settings make it possible for the hearing aids be pre-programmed for some specific and favorite events.

"Made for iPhone" hearing aids shall be designed to directly connect with Apple's iPhones and address some drawbacks from previous hearing aids.

At some point, people would experience hearing loss but it usually starts to happen when they are aged 65 and above. The National Institutes of Health said almost half of those 75 years and older have hearing problems. About 36 million people report hearing loss and in every five people, only one would wear a hearing aid.

Vice President of Audiology for Starkey Hearing Technologies Dave Fabry said people who are 69 years old are the ones who mostly use a hearing aid. Starkey is getting ready for the baby boomer experience as the baby boomers turn 68 this year.

During Apple's yearly big event, in the Worldwide Developers Conference in 2012, Apple announced the start of initiative on "Made for iPhone" where it positions its devices to fit plus giving emphasis on accessibility. Apple's mobile devices contain many settings to make them easier to use for those with issues on hearing, motor control and visual.

Apple has been getting interest in health and fitness devices, transparent in its hires like fitness expert Jay Blahnik, who was consulted by Nike for FuelBand; and expert of sleep research J.E.M. Raymann, who was with Philips Research.

Halo hearing aids from Starkey and TruLink app allow the hearing aid to directly connect with iPhone through Bluetooth. There is no need of any intermediary device. The app allows people to easily adjust to sound settings around. Geotagging uses iPhones GPS to enable customized settings when the wearer is in familiar places such as a fave movie theater or a restaurant.

Live Microphone app can be utilized in noisy places. For instance, when the wearer is a restaurant where it is difficult to hear a companion due to some noises, the iPhone's microphone can pick up the conversation by putting the phone in front of the person opposite him.
