Lumia 940, 940XL, 840, 740 XL release date, specs, rumors: Microsoft's Windows 10 flagship smartphones may feature bigger display and camera
Microsoft was recently reported to be working on four new smartphones with advanced features, though a new report now claims that some of those rumored features were inaccurate and the Redmond giant has made some changes in the specifications of its upcoming devices.
After recently rolling out the Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL and the Lumia 540, Microsoft was rumored to be developing two flagship devices - the Lumia 940 and the Lumia 940XL - and two mid-range smartphones - the Lumia 840 and the Lumia 740 XL.
The Lumia 940 was rumored to sport a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen display, while the Lumia 940XL was expected to feature a bigger 5.7-inch display. Both the smartphones were also rumored to feature a bigger camera than the 20-megapixel sensor present on the Lumia 930. The Lumia 940 and Lumia 940XL are likely to have advanced features such as 3D-Interaction, Iris Scanner and pen support, and will be powered by a new crop of hexa-core and octa-core processors.
However, according to fresh reports, Microsoft is considering embedding a slightly larger 5.2-inch screen for the Lumia 940 in order to differentiate the device, while the Lumia 940 XL is confirmed to have a screen size of 5.7 inches. The new report further claims that both the Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL will sport 24-25-megapixel rear cameras and 5-megapixel front-facing cameras. Since both the devices are expected to come pre loaded with the new Windows 10, which can support high-end processors, Microsoft is likely to use a flagship chipset with an octa-core CPU for the Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL.
As for Microsoft's mid-range smartphones, the Lumia 840 had been expected to come with a 5-inch display screen and a more powerful processor than the one powering its predecessor, the Lumia 830, and feature a 13-14 MP PureView technology rear camera along with a 5 MP front camera. Microsoft's other mid-range smartphone, Lumia 740 XL, was rumored to sport either a 5.5-inch or 5.7-inch display screen and a camera similar to the one present in the Lumia 840, but without the PureView technology. The latest report also confirms the earlier rumored specifications of the Lumia 840 and the Lumia 740 XL.
Microsoft's flagships and mid-range devices are expected to be launched together with Windows 10 for phones. Since Microsoft is likely to push Windows 10 for phones to vendors by the end of Q2, these smartphones could be unveiled in early Q3.
