LG G4 vs Sony Xperia Z4: Will LG G4's chic leather backing tempt consumers away from the Z4 and its 20.7mp camera?

(SONY)

Sony had earlier officially unveiled details of its flagship device, the Xperia Z4, which is the latest in its line of premium Z-series smartphones. On the other hand, LG has finally launched its new G4 flagship Android 5.1 smartphone, which promises a better camera experience, improved display and fashionable design elements, including an all-leather back option. We pitch the Sony Xperia Z4 against the LG G4 to find out how they stack up against each other in terms of design, display, specs, performance and price.

Dimensions: The Sony Xperia Z4 measures 146 x 72 x 6.9 mm and weighs 144 g, while the LG G4 is larger and heavier at 148.9 x 76.1 x 9.8mm and weighing 155g.

Design: Sony Xperia Z4 has adopted its Omni Balance design concept and the smartphone looks very similar to the Z3, but is now lighter and thinner, as well as splash proof and waterproof. The LG G4 comes with eight different leather backings, as well as two polymer (plastic) ones that lend it a premium look.

Display: The Sony Xperia Z4 packs a full HD 5.2-inch Triluminous display running X-Reality Engine, 1080 x 1920 pixels, along with shatter-proof glass, while the LG G4 sports a 5.5-inch Quad HD IPS "Quantum Display" (2,560 x 1,440), which LG claims improves color by 20 percent, brightness by 25 percent, contrast by 50 percent, and is 50 percent brighter than those of its competitors.

Specs: Sony has opted for a Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810, Quad-core Cortex-A53 & Quad-core Cortex-A57 and Adreno 430 GPU in the Xperia Z4. LG has avoided using the Snapdragon 810 system in the G4, as Qualcomm has not yet addressed the overheating issue of the SoC model, and instead runs on a Snapdragon 64-bit hexacore 808 processor clocked at 1.8GHz.

Storage: The LG G4 comes with 32GB of internal storage, which can be increased up to 128GB via a microSD card slot, while the Sony Xperia Z4 is available in 32GB and 64GB variants, which can be expanded to up to 128GB via microSD.

Battery: Sony Xperia Z4 boasts of the largest non-removable Li-Ion 2,930mAh battery, while the LG G4 comes with a 3000 mAh removable battery pack.

Camera: LG's new phone has a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/1.8 aperture, laser auto focus, and optical image stabilization 2.0., resulting in higher resolution shots, which capture 80-percent more light. The LG G4 also sports a front-facing 8MP camera with improved gesture shot for better selfies. Sony Xperia Z4 sports a 20.7 megapixel rear camera with 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS sensor and BOINX image processor, along with a 5.1 megapixel front camera.

Operating system: The Sony Xperia Z4 runs Android 5.0 Lollipop, while the LG G4 runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with LG's UX 4.0 on top on it.

Price: The Xperia Z4 will be initially available only in Japan and should hit the stores there this summer, though Sony has not provided any pricing details. LG is also yet to announce the pricing for the G4, but the company sees the smartphone's vegetable-tanned leather back as a luxury offering and believes that consumers won't mind paying a premium for it. So you can expect the LG G4 to be priced higher than the Sony Xperia Z4.
