Leica M (Typ 262) specs: cheaper rangefinder camera focuses on essentials of photography

(Leica)

The Leica M (Typ 262) is Leica's new compact digital rangefinder camera. The new camera joining the M-lineup is a stripped-down version of the Leica M (Typ 240) which was released back in 2012.

The Leica M (Typ 262) comes with a 24 MP CMOS full-frame sensor with Leica M lens mount. It has an ISO range of up to 6400. Images captured are detailed with outstanding contrast and low image noise – even in low-light conditions. The camera also has a speedy Maestro image processor.

According to Leica, the M (Typ 262) camera focuses on the essentials of photography and allows photographers to experience the M-philosophy in its truest and purest form. The camera provides photographers with the bare essentials – this means that the camera has no Live View and no video recording capability.

The Leica M (Typ 262) comes with a functional and timeless design. The camera was made using lightweight and durable aluminum. Weighing 600 grams, the Leica M (Typ 262) is 100 grams lighter than previous models. The stripped down camera also has a minimalist design. The size of the logo has been reduced.

On the other side of the camera, controls and functions were made easy accessible and placed ergonomically. The omission of Live View and Video has also helped simplify the menu. Currently, there are only two pages of settings and options.

The Leica M (Typ 262) also comes with a 0.68x optical viewfinder and a 3-inch TFT LCD display with Gorilla Glass. The 921,600-dot-pixel display allows photographers to review their pictures and adjust exposure, sharpness and color.

Discreet photography is also possible with the Leica M (Typ 262) due to its "barely audible shutter." Photographers can get close to the action without disrupting the subject. In single exposure mode, shutter speed is two frames per second. In continuous mode, it is up to three frames per second.

The Leica M (Typ 240) can now be pre-ordered and shipping is expected to start on Nov. 25. The camera is priced at $5,195. Although it is still pricey, it is a more affordable version of the Leica M (Typ 240) which is being sold for $6,950.
