'Jurassic World 2' news: sequel explores other companies making dinosaurs; moves off the island
Once "Jurassic World" hit the big numbers and firmly established itself as one of highest-grossing films in Hollywood's history, it was a given that a "Jurassic Park 2" would immediately be in the works.
The movie did a great job paying homage to "Jurassic Park" but it obviously cannot keep doing that forever, a fact that director, Colin Trevorrow, is only too aware off when he talked to "Wired."
The 38-year-old director will not be sitting in the director's chair for the sequel but will instead hold producing and co-writing duties with Derek Connelly. Trevorrow assures dinosaur fans that the sequel will definitely get off the island since that type of story "gets old real fast." The director is also aware that the next movie should be bigger in terms of scale and throws around the idea that as the dominant species now, how would we cope if animals who were "the Alpha on this planet for far longer than we've ever existed" is mixed with us.
The indie-film stalwart also revealed that "Jurassic World 2" is not going to be "limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment."
Trevorrow gave nuclear power as an example; how it was initially considered as a weapon before scientists realized it could also be used for something else – energy. It is the same way that the director opened the idea of dinosaurs being used as weapons in "Jurassic World," along with the premise that InGen might not be the only company with the capability to bring back these extinct creatures.
"What if this went open source? It's almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it?" Trevorrow mused aloud. "What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?"
That is certainly a possibility that "Jurassic World 2" can explore, especially with scientist, Henry Wu, last seen going off with some mercenaries.
"Jurassic World 2" is slated to hit theaters on June 22, 2018. Stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are confirmed to be reprising their roles as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, respectively.
