iPad Air 3 release date, specs rumors: device canceled?

(Apple)The iPad Air 3, successor of the iPad Air 2 (pictured), is rumored to have been canceled.

The tech community is talking about the upcoming iPad Air 3. When Apple did not launch the tablet last year, many suspected that it was going to be postponed. And many believed that the grand unveiling of the said device would take place at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, but the event passed and there was no news of the iPad Air 3. Due to this, rumors have started circulating that the lineup might have been canceled altogether.

Despite this, some Apple enthusiasts are still clinging to the hope that the next iPad Air will still see the light of day. It has been noted that the previous iteration of the lineup, the iPad Air 2, is seeing a drop in price among U.S. retailers. And as tech enthusiasts know, a discounted price could likely mean that there's a new and improved version coming their way.

However, this has not stopped reports from pointing out the obvious. The iPad Air lineup is becoming dangerously close to the iPad Pro. It has been said that the next generation of the iPad Pro could force Apple to phase out the iPad Air due to the former's smaller and slimmer version. Plus, the specifications and price of the two models are also quite similar.

Additionally, the tablet industry has been seeing a dip in sales, which cannot be good news for all tablet manufacturers, including the Cupertino tech company. It remains to be seen, though, if the decline in sales is only momentary or if it's a trend that's going to continue into the future. Moreover, more and more companies have been looking to streamline their products, and it could be no different for Apple.

The first iPad Air was released in October 2013 and the iPad Air 2 came out in the same month the year after. So when the third iteration to the lineup did not come out in October 2015, many turned their heads in confusion.

At this rate, will Apple still release the iPad Air 3? And if it is, could it land in October?
