iOS 10.3 release date, news: Next Apple OS update expected to release 'Theatre mode'
Just a few weeks after the iOS 10.2 was released, the Cupertino-based company is now on the move to release iOS 10.3 with an interesting Theatre mode feature, according to reports.
BGR reports that the rumors about the release of a Theatre Mode feature came via a tweet by noted insider Sonny Dickson. In the tweet which was posted near the end of 2016, Dickson said, "iOS 10.3 to feature a new Theatre mode - will include a new popcorn-shaped Control Center icon."
While the tweet and leak does not provide much to speculate on what to expect from the rumored Theatre Mode, BGR also mentioned that many are guessing that this option will pave the way for a "specialized phone-mode" that will adjust the mobile device's settings to suit a particular environment, just like when iPhone and iPad users go to movie theatres. If that guess tallies, then the Theatre Mode will be a little similar to the usual Do Not Disturb function.
In other reports, like in 9 To 5 Mac, the Theatre Mode is speculated to be an enhanced version of the Dark Mode feature. The Dark Mode is one of the additional features of iOS 10 that when activated, it adjusts the screen's brightness and color calibration settings to make it easier to view and appropriate under low-light environments.
In the same 9 To 5 Mac report, Dickson reportedly confirmed that the source of the leak has had a good record of giving out accurate information before. The report also mentioned that the iOS 10.3 is currently codenamed "Erie."
The Theatre Mode is speculated to not only adjust the notification sound and brightness settings, it is also expected to give iPhone and iPad users a one tap command to do both as well as to block incoming calls and messages, according to Apple Insider.
Apple Insider has also recalled that the Cupertino-based techology giant has filed patents that are similar to the rumored functions of Theatre Mode. The report cited U.S. Patent No. 8,254,902 for "Apparatus and methods for enforcement of policies upon a wireless device" that will deal with unwanted notifications.
As per another tweet from Dickson, the iOS 10.3's first beta version will go live on Tuesday, Jan. 10.
