Microsoft HoloLens release date: futuristic Holoportation feature
It is no secret that Microsoft wants its upcoming augmented reality headset to be the most advanced when it releases. The company is currently busy developing the headset, but that does not mean that it is not showing off what it can do, and one of the recent demos released focuses on its ability to communicate via holograms.
Reporting on the demo released for the holographic communication feature, The Verge states that first of all the company has churned out a cool demo that is going to set tongues wagging. It goes on to point out that the demo focuses on the idea of Holoportation. This particular term, while bordering on science fiction, is apt when referring to the feature as it involves creating a hologram of a person and then interacting with it.
Importantly, this feature on the HoloLens consists of a number of sophisticated 3D cameras capturing the image and movements of a person in an enclosed space. Then, this image can be transferred to a HoloLens being worn by a person in a totally different room or anywhere around the world. This real-time capture and transmission of 3D models of people will allow people wearing HoloLens headsets to interact with others in a physical space even if they are not present.
Microsoft importantly described "Holoportation" as being as natural as the ability to communicate with a person face-to-face. Since the demo of the feature was showcased on the Internet, many, including The Verge, have pointed out that it is similar to the holographic communication that was used in the "Star Wars" film franchise. This goes to show that several times, science follows ideas that are outlined in science fiction but it is clear that for this particular feature on the HoloLens, it will have to be backed up with a lot of hardware and powerful computers. As for the price of the developer's edition of the HoloLens, it has already been announced to be around $3,000, and importantly, the headset will start shipping by March 30.
