'Gambit' female lead shortlist down to 3: Rebecca Ferguson, Abbey Lee, and Lea Seydoux
Behind every successful man is a woman, says the famous saying. The same is true even for superheroes. And even with the current haze on who will play Gambit in the upcoming 2016 movie, the female lead has been narrowed down to three.
Bella Donna Boudreux is best known to comic fans as the childhood love of Remy LeBeau aka Gambit. The two were once married in an attempt to unite the rival Guilds that they were part of but were separated when Gambit killed her brother, Julien. She will be the main squeeze for Gambit in the 2016 film named after the X-Men superhero.
But the question is, who will fill in this very important role? Deadline reports that casting has been narrowed down to three choices: "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation's" Rebecca Ferguson, "Mad Max: Fury Road's" Abbey Lee, and latest Bond girl Lea Seydoux. Ferguson, Lee, and Seydoux will all have a testing next week and "Gambit" may lock in its female lead soon after.
Talks about a standalone "Gambit" film started in October 2014 when Josh Zetumer was tasked to write a screenplay for the said movie. The treatment will be based on Chris Claremont, who co-created the Gambit character, and his X-Men stories.
Directing the film is Rupert Wyatt while producing are Lauren Shuler Donner, Reid Carlin, Simon Kinberg, and Channing Tatum, the latter also being slated to play the title role.
Meanwhile, there have been rumors that Tatum will no longer play the lead, following reports that the film might not push through. The rumors were further stoked when speculations suggested that Gambit's character will no longer be making an appearance in the other X-Men movie, "X-Men: Apocalypse."
The new X-Men character standalone movie will start filming in September in New Orleans.
"Gambit" is set for a worldwide release on Oct. 7, 2016.
